Glan Yr Afon, Mochdre Children’s Long Term Residential home

MPH Construction

Nestled on the outskirts of Mochdre, Glan Yr Afon represents a transformative approach to children’s residential care in Wales. Developed by MPH Construction Ltd for Conwy County Borough Council, this purpose-built home sets a new standard for long-term placements of children who are looked after. Completed in May 2025, the £1.4 million project was delivered under the NEC 4 contract framework and showcases a powerful synergy between modern construction and community-led values.

The building itself replaces two semi-detached homes with a fully accessible, regulation-compliant residence featuring four children’s bedrooms and two staff bedrooms—each with en-suite facilities and anti-ligature fixtures. Communal living spaces, office areas, landscaped gardens, secure external areas, and modern lighting all contribute to a safe and nurturing environment designed with care and dignity at its core.

Sustainability was a cornerstone of the project, with Net Carbon Zero in operation achieved through integration of the latest renewable technologies. Waste was minimized via ‘Just in Time’ inventory management, and the landscaping includes green spaces that promote biodiversity and community wellbeing. These environmental commitments reflect Welsh Government priorities and signal a resilient, forward-thinking infrastructure.

Beyond bricks and mortar, Glan Yr Afon delivers a wealth of social value. The project created numerous opportunities for local apprentices, particularly in joinery and skilled trades, while prioritizing procurement within a 50-mile radius—ensuring that the economic ripple effect benefited surrounding communities. Partnerships with colleges and community groups fostered educational engagement through site visits and work experience placements.

Glan Yr Afon also strengthens Wales’ cultural and ethical commitments. All signage and communications were bilingual, supporting the Welsh language and fostering inclusive dialogue. The project aligned with The Ethical & Employment in Supply Chains code of practice, reinforcing fair and responsible employment standards.

Additionally, the site was home to a trained mental health first aider throughout the construction phase, ensuring holistic health support. Respiratory protection measures and face-fit testing further safeguarded workers’ physical health, underlining the project’s commitment to a healthier Wales.

Ultimately, Glan Yr Afon is more than a residential facility—it’s a model of how thoughtful design, ethical construction, and community investment can come together to build not just homes, but lasting, local impact. A beacon for prosperous, resilient, and cohesive communities in North Wales.
