Former Johnstown Infant School – Alterations and Refurbishment.
BrynbuildBrynBuild successfully delivered a £1,450,000 comprehensive refurbishment project for Wrexham County Council, transforming the former Johnstown Infant School into a modern, purpose-built secondary school for pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) between October 2025 and June 2026.
Executed under a JCT Intermediate Contract 2016, the traditional delivery breathed new life into the existing building by upgrading its infrastructure with a new warm deck roof, complete electrical rewiring, and energy-efficient heating systems. Internally, the school was fitted with specialist facilities—including a science lab, media suite, three sensory rooms, and internal dining pods—complemented externally by external learning pods, sports courts, and a polytunnel to support inclusive and active learning environments.
Delivered in partnership with the North Wales Construction Partnership (NWCP), the project actively championed the Well-being of Future Generations goals by driving strong social and environmental value. The team diverted 100% of site waste from landfill, utilized exclusively certified sustainable timber, and heavily invested in the regional economy by routing 71% of subcontractor spend through Welsh-based SMEs. Furthermore, the project boosted local employment with 72% of the workforce living in Wales (including 18% Welsh speakers who used the language daily on-site) while fostering community engagement through regular stakeholder updates, resident sessions, and school STEM career events.
